For those of you that have had pictures taken by Tom Buchanan for an event or portrait session, please follow this link to go to your proofs.  In order to conserve space on the site I remove images on after a few months.  The images are then archived but are available for a very reasonable fee that I charge primarily for administration.

Text Box: Photographic Fun Through Education

See the new line-up of courses and workshops that I teach.  The spring courses are published on my site. Jump to Workshops and Courses to see them as they are developed and published.   Courses are taught at the Helen Schuller Nature Centre, in Coaldale at the CLCLC, in Taber at Community Adult Learning, in Fort Macleod at various locations and we will be holding regular classes in Lethbridge at our offices there.  Watch this site for more information.

I have been photographing people for a long time.  The joy I get out of having a person exclaim “Wow” when they see their portrait brings a smile to my face.  Oh sure sometimes it doesn’t work out the way we want it to, but for the most part I have been pretty successful in getting the results I want.  Over the years I’ve studied hard with some of the best to learn my craft and I can honestly say that I learn something new every day.  What a job I have. Creating images of interesting people and having the honour of being their photographer.  I’ve been very lucky and I’m grateful.

So with that in mind, after retiring a year ago, I decided to start creating a series of images that truly will capture what I want to see.  It’s called my portrait project.  The plan was to work with up to 50 individuals and photograph them in my studio the way I want to photograph them.  This means that I set the stage and create images that are strictly my work and are not subject to a client’s  whim.  You see when you are creating images for a client, it is entirely up to them as to how they want it to look.  After all they’re paying for it, so do the job their way. This project is for me instead.

So what am I going to do with these images?  Well the first thing is to use them in a book that I want to produce. Next I’ll select a number of them to be printed and create a private show that I am going to send around the country to various galleries.

How long will the project last?  I began a year ago and have about half the number of images that I want.  I expect it could be another year yet or more before it’s complete.  I’m targeting the summer of 2013 for the completed project to be available for public viewing.  I know that sounds like a long time, but I still have to serve my clients in the meantime and that comes before anything for me.

So are you interested in becoming

involved in my project?  If you say yes I can promise you that it will be a lot of fun and I also promise you that I will make it worth your while as well.

What type of photography am I going to do?  Portraiture is the only type of images that I really enjoy creating and studio images are my specialty so everything that I create will be done in a studio setting using professional studio lighting and props.

I want to point out that this is not figure study work (nudes).  The themes I want to explore are tied to  emotions. Therefore the people I work with must be excited about life and be readily able to show that excitement through their emotions.

So that’s the scoop.  If you’re interested in finding out what it’s all about, call me at the number below or send me an e-mail and we will arrange a session.

I must mention what this is not… It’s not a family photo session. I’m looking for individuals only, not couples and model releases will be signed.

Look at my  Pricing and Terms for info on my other sessions such as family and couples photography if that’s what you really want.
