I have been photographing people for a long time. The joy I get out of having a person exclaim “Wow” when they see their portrait brings a smile to my face. Oh sure sometimes it doesn’t work out the way we want it to, but for the most part I have been pretty successful in getting the results I want. Over the years I’ve studied hard with some of the best to learn my craft and I can honestly say that I learn something new every day. What a job I have. Creating images of interesting people and having the honour of being their photographer. I’ve been very lucky and I’m grateful.
So with that in mind, after retiring a year ago, I decided to start creating a series of images that truly will capture what I want to see. It’s called my portrait project. The plan was to work with up to 50 individuals and photograph them in my studio the way I want to photograph them. This means that I set the stage and create images that are strictly my work and are not subject to a client’s whim. You see when you are creating images for a client, it is entirely up to them as to how they want it to look. After all they’re paying for it, so do the job their way. This project is for me instead.
So what am I going to do with these images? Well the first thing is to use them in a book that I want to produce. Next I’ll select a number of them to be printed and create a private show that I am going to send around the country to various galleries.
How long will the project last? I began a year ago and have about half the number of images that I want. I expect it could be another year yet or more before it’s complete. I’m targeting the summer of 2013 for the completed project to be available for public viewing. I know that sounds like a long time, but I still have to serve my clients in the meantime and that comes before anything for me.
